If you want to check your household outlets for safety, the Receptacle Tester makes it easy.
Just plug it into a receptacle and the unit will test to show ground fault interruption, open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/ground/reverse, hot/neutral/reverse, and correct wiring.

GFCI and Receptacle tester tests ground fault receptacles by overloading circuit and tripping GFCI.
Tests for seven conditions: ground fault interruption, open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/ground reverse, hot/neutral reverse, and correct wiring
Succession of red and yellow lights provides indication of circuit status or specifies wiring errors.
Tester trips GFCI between 6-9 mA.
Easy to use.
Tests: standard outlets, GFCI outlets, extension cords.

We recommend a properly wired receptacle as per National Electrical Codes to use our Products.
The Receptacle Tester is a good indicator of a properly wired receptacle.

It is difficult for us to troubleshoot Receptacle Tester Faults via email and is beyond the scope of our Support.
Please consider hiring an Electrician to repair your receptacle if the lights show a fault.
If you, a friend or acquaintance are handy with a screwdriver and know how to turn off the correct circuit breaker for a receptacle, you may be interested in this video about hot/neutral mis-wiring.:

INSTRUCTIONS

Check for correctly wired ground point on the receptacle to be used for connecting your Voltage Discharge Device by inserting the Receptacle Tester into the receptacle socket and ensuring that ONLY the two yellow lights are "ON". See Figure 1 below:

Figure 1 - Receptacle Tester - Two YELLOW lights indicates OK to use. Any other combination indicates a possible wiring problem within the receptacle or house so DO NOT PROCEED! Please contact a qualified Electrician for repair.

You can use a Ground Rod in cases where fixing the receptacle wiring is not possible.
